April 1, 2010
Senior guard Allison Taka, senior guard Erica Tukiainen and sophomore guard Rebekah Gardner were named to the 2010 Pacific-10 Conference Women's Basketball All-Academic team, announced on Thursday by Commissioner Larry Scott.
Taka, who was limited to action in nine games this season due to a lingering foot injury, was selected to the first team after posting a 3.76 gpa while majoring in Sociology. She was also a first-team pick last season. Tukiainen, the team captain who finished her career second on the all-time school games played list with 128, was named to the second team with a 3.42 gpa in a French / Pre-Med. major. She was also a second-team selection a year ago and earned honorable mention following her sophomore season. Gardner, who played in all 34 games with seven starts this past year, merited honorable mention accolades.
Coach Nikki Caldwell's women's basketball team advanced to the second round of play in the NCAA Tournament this past season and completed the year with a 25-9 record after a second-place finish in the Pac-10 conference. The 25 victories marked the fourth-best win total ever by a UCLA women's basketball team. Caldwell was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year.
