Cal Baseball's Friday, April 2 Game Versus No. 18 Arizona Rained Out
April 2, 2010
Rain in the Bay Area has postponed the Friday, April 2 baseball game between No. 18 Arizona (20-6, 2-2) and California (14-10, 1-3). Two teams have re-scheduled to play a doubleheader, Saturday, April 3 beginning at 12 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Starting on the mound for the Golden Bears in game one will be freshman left-hander Justin Jones, who is 5-1 with a 3.59 ERA and has 41 strikeouts (seventh in the Pac-10) in 47.2 innings (first in the Pac-10). Jones has already thrown two complete games this season, March 20 at Cal Poly and March 12 at Rice.
Possible game two starter is sophomore right-hander Dixon Anderson, who is 2-1 this season with a 3.44 ERA in eight appearances and five starts. Anderson has 29 strikeouts in 36.2 innings and recently had a solid outing March 28 at No. 1-ranked Arizona State, throwing a career-high 7.1 innings with one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts.
On Thursday, Cal played well in its 7-2 victory over the ranked Wildcats. Sophomore right-hander Erik Johnson improved his record to 4-1 on the year by throwing 6.0 innings with six hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts against an Arizona squad that entered the game leading the Pac-10 with a .372 team batting average.
Offensively, the Bears were paced by junior first baseman Mark Canha, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and increased his hitting streak to 15 games. Cal exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and finished the day with 11 hits, including sophomore catcher Chadd Krist, Defino and Semien (RBI triple) with two hits apiece.
After hosting Arizona in a Pac-10 series, the Bears will host Bay Area rival Stanford in a non-conference game on Monday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
