Relay Teams And Throwers Excel At The Texas Relays
April 2, 2010
The men's sprint medley team ran what is believed to be a school record, Marissa Minderler and Cooper Thompson moved up USC's all-time javelin lists and Lauren Guerrieri moved into USC's all-time discus list to highlight USC's action today (April 2) at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
The men's 1600m sprint medley team of seniors Ahmad Rashad, Jason Price, and Nate Anderson and sophomore Blake Shaw had an impressive time of 3:17.95 to place fourth. The time is believed to be a new school record bettering the mark of 3:18 set by Rex Cawley, Dave Morris, Dick Cortese and Kevin Hogan in 1963, but further research will be done tomorrow.
The redshirt sophomore Minderler continued her assault on the USC top 10 lists, this time throwing the javelin 157-3 (47.92m) to move into fifth place on USC all-time javelin list (since 1999-new implement). He mark gave her a third-place finish in the women's 'B Section' javelin competition. Already this season she has moved into USC's all-time lists in the shot put (9th) and hammer throw (9th).
In the men's javelin 'B Section,' the sophomore Thompson had a PR of 226-0 (68.88m) to place second. His throw moved him from ninth to fourth on USC's all-time javelin list.
In the women's discus 'A Section' competition, the redshirt sophomore Guerrieri placed fifth with a PR of 163-3 (49.77m). That mark moves Guerrieri into 8th place on USC's all-time women's discus list.
In other relay events for the Trojans, the men's 4x100m relay team of redshirst sophomore Amechi Egbe, Rashad, sophomore Jahmar Rashad and sophomore Joey Hughes advanced to Saturday's finals with a season-best time of 40.70. Their time was seventh-best qualifier on the day.
The women's 4x400m relay team also advanced to Saturday's finals by posting a season-best time of 3:37.41, the second-best qualifying time. The Trojan runners were senior Elizabeth Olear, sophomore Dalilah Muhammad, senior Shalina Clarke and senior Myra Hasson and they cut nearly four seconds off their previous best time this season.
In the high hurdles, Clarke had the fourth-best qualifying time of 13.49w in the women's 100m HH to advance to Saturday's finals. Juniors Oscar Spurlock and Brendan Ames both advanced to the finals in the men's 110m HH to take place tomorrow. Spurlock had a wind-aided season-best time of 13.81 for the second-best qualifying time, while Ames had a wind-aided 14.10 time. Ames' time was the seventh-best on the day and his best time as a Trojan.
Senior Judith Onyepunuka had a season-best wind-aided time of 11.70 in the 100m dash, but did not advance to the finals as that was the 13th-best time on the day. Freshman jumper Alitta Boyd won her heat with a time of 12.36w to place 54th.
Also on the field today for USC, in the men's long jump 'B section,' Ames placed fifth with a season-best leap of 24-3.50 (7.40m). Boyd had only one clean jump of 19-1.25w (5.82m) in the women's long jump 'A Section: and did not advance to the final round. She placed 13th in the competition.
