Zazueta Takes 12th in Collegiate Debut
April 2, 2010
TUCSON – Freshman Fabian Zazueta wrapped up his first career decathlon in his first ever collegiate meet as he finished 12th overall Friday at the Jim Click Combined Event Championships at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
Zazueta finished the day strong to finish with 6,050 points in the first multi-event competition of the youngter’s career.
Zazueta was a successful high school runner and a hometown kid, competing just north of Tucson at Marana High School. Now he has stepped to the big leagues on the collegiate level, posting a respectable finish considering it was the first competition of its kind the frosh has taken part in.
Zazueta highlighted the second day by finishing third overall in the javelin throw, the ninth event of the two-day competition. After two strong fouls, Zazueta’s third and final attempt soared 53.21m (174-07) to just edge Kansas State’s Moritz Kleve.
Zazueta followed the strong throw up with a strong run, finishing the 1500-meter run – the final event of the day – in fourth place in 4:40.20.
Former UA standout Jake Arnold, now competing for Asics, won the overall competition.
The weekend will continue tomorrow as collegiate athletes from the UA, Cal, Nebraska, Kansas State and Minnesota compete in the Jim Click Shootout. Field events begin at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw with the running events set to kick off at 12:30 p.m.
