Bears Sweep First Day of Pac-10 Challenge
April 3, 2010
REDWOOD SHORES - California opened the 2010 season winning every race it competed in during the first day of the Pac-10 Challenge Saturday at Redwood Shores. The Golden Bears were the only collegiate women's team to go undefeated in the first day. Cal won a total of nine races.
'It was definitely a great start to the season,' head coach Dave O'Neill said. 'We had nearly everyone on our team compete at some point among these nine races. For us to win them all against some great competition says we have a really good team. Of course this is just the first step. We'll make some changes for tomorrow and look for continued improvement.'
Cal competed against Iowa in the morning session, except for a matchup with the varsity 4+ against Stanford. In the afternoon races, the Bears faced Oregon State, and Cal's third varsity 8+ squared off against Santa Clara.
Iowa was making its first-ever appearance at Redwood Shores, and it was the first-ever meeting between the Bears and the Hawkeyes. Cal won all three races against Iowa, including the varsity 8+ winning with a time of 6:36.4 to Iowa's 6:50.7. Rowing on the Bears' varsity 8+ was freshman Kara Kohler, a novice making her collegiate debut on the varsity 8+.
In the second varsity 8+ race, senior Jill Costello, who has been battling cancer since last June, was the coxswain. The Bears were victorious with a time of 6:45.7 to Iowa's 7:07.0.
'Having Jill back with the team on a regular basis and racing is truly inspiring,' O'Neill said. 'She's been dealing with so much and still competing at a very high level. She's a special person.'
The closest race of the day was the varsity 4+ against Stanford. The Bears edged the Cardinal, 7:28.2-7:30.1.
'We expected the four's race against Stanford to be a tough one, and it certainly was,' O'Neill said. 'It was great to win this meeting, but we'll see them a lot during the season.'
In the afternoon session, Cal swept all four races against Oregon State. In the varsity 8+ the Bears topped the Beavers, 6:47.7-6:55.8. Cal's second varsity 8+ beat Oregon State by over 13 seconds, 6:47.2-7:00.7.
In Cal's last race of the day, the Bears third varsity 8+ cruised past Santa Clara, 7:23.8-7:58.8.
The Bears will compete in three races tomorrow, starting with the varsity 8+ against Wisconsin at 9 a.m.
