April 3, 2010
BERKELEY - No. 3-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Jana Juricova overcame second-ranked USC junior Maria Sanchez at the top singles court to earn a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win as she clinched a 5-2 victory for the Golden Bears at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 3. Cal (14-4, 2-1 Pac-10) replicated the 5-2 score it posted the first time it met the Trojans (11-7, 3-1) to regain the winning track.
The Bears claimed their 16th doubles point of the season as they swept all three courts to take the first point of the day. Cal's freshman tandem of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson got things started with an 8-4 win over Sarah Fansler and Lynsday Kinstler at court three. The Bears pocketed the doubles point as their No. 73-ranked team of junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz finished up an 8-4 win against Alison Ramos and Valeria Pulido at court two. In a heated battle on the top court, Cal's seventh-ranked duo of junior Mari Andersson and Juricova pushed past No. 46-ranked Danielle Lao and Sanchez, 8-6, to finish up the sweep.
Cal registered the first point in singles play as freshman Nelly Radeva completed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kinstler at court six. USC got on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court three as No. 30 Lao took out Siwosz, but the Bears replied to go up, 3-1, as Davis logged a 6-4, 6-2 win against Fansler at court five. It was Davis' 20th singles victory of the year. After pulling even at five-all in the second set, Goransson couldn't hold on as the Trojans tacked up a second point with a 6-3, 7-5 win by No. 103 Pulido.
Juricova won her first set, 6-3, before taking a 5-4 lead in the second, but Sanchez held her ground to earn a 7-5 win and force a third set. After leading, 3-2, in the final stanza, Juricova went to the next level and finished off a 6-3 win in the third to clinch the victory for the Bears. At court two, No. 44 Andersson dropped her first set, 6-4, to No. 26 Ramos, but came back to earn a split with a 6-3 win in the second. With the final set knotted at four-all, Andersson held serve to go up, 5-4, before breaking Ramos for a 6-4 win.
The Bears host No. 7 UCLA (16-3, 3-1) in a 9 a.m. PT match on Easter Sunday, April 4, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please check CalBears.com for results post match.
