No. 21 Oregon State Holds On For 4-3 Win

April 3, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Kraig Sitton struck out Joe De Pinto in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded Saturday as the No. 21 Oregon State Beavers held on for the 4-3 victory over the USC Trojans to take the Pac-10 Conference series two games to one. Michael Miller went 2-for-5 with a two-run inside-the-park home run for the Beavers.

Oregon State (18-6, 2-1) earned its first series win at Dedeaux Field since 2004.

Sam Gaviglio earned the win in his first start of the season for the Beavers, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Sitton earned his second save after entering the game with the bases loaded and two outs.

Andrew Triggs got the loss for USC (14-14, 2-4) after allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings with a walk and six strikeouts. Keith Castillo and Alex Sherrod had two hits each for the Trojans.

Adalberto Santos started the game with a bunt single down the third base line. Miller then laced a line drive down the third base line that curled in front of the tarp placed off the left field wall. USC left fielder Matt Foat raced over and put his hands up to signify a ground-rule double, but the umpires ruled that the ball was still in play as Miller made it a 2-0 lead on the unconventional home run. Matt Boyd, who later pitched in relief and allowed one run in three innings, singled and Dylan Jones doubled for runners at second and third before Carter Bell hit an RBI groundout with OSU taking the 3-0 lead in the first.

Castillo and Sherrod hit back-to-back singles to open the USC second. Matt Hart sacrificed to advance both runners and Mike O'Neill hit an RBI groundout for the Trojans' first run. Gaviglio then threw a wild pickoff throw to second as Sherrod moved to third and a wild pitch from Gaviglio made it a one-run deficit.

In the bottom of the seventh, Castillo laced a double to right center. After Hart walked, pinch-hitter Cade Kreuter was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Kevin Roundtree hit a hard one-hopper to first that Jared Norris took and tagged the bag for the third out. The Beavers loaded the bases in the ninth and added an insurance run when Stefen Romero was hit by a Brandon Garcia pitch.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Adam Landecker walked and Sherrod followed with a single to right. Kevin Rhoderick came in for the Beavers and struck out Hart for the second out, but then hit Garcia with a pitch to load the bases. OSU brought in Sitton as the Trojans turned to pinch-hitter Garret Houts, who worked the count full before drawing a walk to make it a 4-3 score. De Pinto fouled off a couple of pitches with a 1-2 count before Sitton struck him out to secure the win.

USC hosts Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday (April 7) at 6:30 p.m. before hosting California in Pac-10 action next weekend (April 9-11). All four games will be broadcast through a live video webcast on
