April 5, 2010
WAITAKERE CITY, New Zealand - California senior Lauren Boyle qualified for her country's Commonwealth Games team in the 200-meter freestyle by winning the event at the New Zealand Open Championships on Monday at the West Wave Aquatic Centre. Boyle posted a time of 1:59.59 to claim victory on the opening day of the meet, which runs through Friday, April 9.
This marks Boyle's second Commonwealth Games team and first individual berth in that meet for Boyle. She competed on New Zealand's 2006 Commonwealth Games squad as part of the bronze-medal winning 4x200-meter freestyle relay. A 2008 Olympian, Boyle swam on New Zealand's 4x200-free relay in Beijing.
Boyle was also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic second team on Monday.
A product of Whenuapai near Auckland, New Zealand, Boyle completed a stellar Cal career in the NCAA Championships in March. In her last event as a Golden Bear, Boyle placed third in the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 15:59.57. The school record holder in the event (15:56.93), Boyle is still the only Bear to swim under 16 minutes in the 1650. She also swam on Cal's second-place 4x200- or 800-yard free relay, which clocked a time of 7:00.00, claimed second place in the 500-yard free (4:37.18) and took 12th place in the 200-yard free (1:45.68).
Boyle's time in the 500 at NCAAs moved her into second place on Cal's all-time fastest list for that event. Her personal-best time in the 200-free preliminary race (1:45.64) at NCAAs made her Cal's eighth-fastest Bear in that event.
In February, Boyle won the 500-free title at the Pac-10 Championships in a time of 4:38.77. She also took second in the 1650 free (16:09.72) and fifth in the 200 free (1:46.29) at the conference meet.
