Caitlin Leverenz Named Pac-10 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year

BERKELEY - California's Caitlin Leverenz was selected as the 2010 Pac-10 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches, the Pac-10 announced on Wednesday. Leverenz, who set the school record in the 400-yard individual medley in her first year as a Golden Bear, is the second straight Cal swimmer to earn the award. Current sophomore Liv Jensen claimed the accolade in 2009.
Leverenz, a freshman from Tucson, Ariz., had a breakout season for the Cal. At the NCAA Championships, Leverenz finished seventh in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.59), seventh in the 200-yard IM (1:57.16) and ninth in the 400-yard IM (4:07.00) to help lead the squad to an overall third place finish.
At the Pac-10 Championships, she took third place in the 400-yard IM, clocking an NCAA automatic qualifying and a Cal-record time of 4:06.61. She also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.51) and sixth in the 200-yard IM (1:57.37) as Cal finished in second place.
