Cats Claw Miners in Double Dip
April 7, 2010
Game 2 - Arizona 10, UTEP 0 (5 inn.)
TUCSON -- The Cats unleashed an 11-hit-hit attack and blasted past UTEP, 10-0, in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader Wednesday evening before 2,633 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Both games were five-inning affairs, fueled by good pitching and hitting by the third-ranked Wildcats. Freshman Kenzie Fowler threw a no-hitter in the opener and Sarah Akamine scattered four hits in tossing her fifth shutout of the year.
In the second game UA started fast as it had in the opener, batting around and picking up eight runs in the first inning, with RBI singles from Stacie Chambers and Brigette Del Ponte, a run-scoring grounder by Kristen Arriola, a three-run home run from Lini Koria and a two-run homer from Brittany Lastrapes.
UA (32-4) sent 12 hitters to the plate and chased UTEP starter Stacie Townsend (22-9) for the second consecutive game early in her appearance.
The Miners dropped to 26-14.
Del Ponte hit her second home run of the day and 15th of the year after a Chambers walk to make it 10-0 in the second inning and chase reliever Joanna Krienitz in favor of Courtney Auger, the Miners' third pitcher.
UTEP had its first hit of the day with a single by Stacie Troupe in the first, singles by Ashley Ellis and Kayleight Walts in the second and a single by Camilia Carrera in the fourth. Akamine (11-2) struck out seven, including the side in the fifth, and walked none.
The home runs gave Arizona 68 for the season.
Game 1 - Arizona 8, UTEP 0 (5 inn.)
TUCSON -- Kenzie Fowler threw a five-inning no-hitter and Arizona used a couple of long balls to punctuate an 8-0 victory over UTEP (26-13) in game 1 of an evening doubleheader at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Fowler improved to 21-2 for No. 3-ranked Arizona (31-4), striking out nine, walking two and hitting a pair of batters. It was her third no-hitter, all in five innings.
The Miners loaded the bases without a hit in the top of the first. Kia Moore, reached third when second baseman Kristen Arriola missed a throw off a ground ball. Fowler set the next two batters down, but then hit Camilla Carrera and Chelsea Troupe with pitches to load the bases. Ashley Ellis hit into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
UA responded. Lauren Schutzler singled, stole second and moved to third on an infield hit by K'Lee Arredondo, who also stole second. Stacie Chambers singled up the middle to plate both runners and post a 2-0 lead. Brigette Del Ponte then slugged a home run, her 14th, to straightaway center to double the margin.
Arriola powered a one-out home run to deep left to make it 5-0 in the second.
The Cats picked up the mercy-rule runs in the fourth without a hit, getting six bases on balls, an error and a passed ball to plate three runs.
The no-hitter was freshman Fowler's third no-hitter of the year.
UTEP ace Stacie Townsend (22-8) took the loss in one and a third innings. She was lifted after Arriola's second-inning homer.
