Former Bear Jeff Cosgriff Signs with AC St. Louis

April 7, 2010

BERKELEY - Jeff Cosgriff, who completed his college career last fall, became the 13th former California player currently in the professional ranks when he joined AC St. Louis of the USSF Division 2 Pro League in late February. The former Golden Bears forward, who is still taking classes towards his economics major at Cal, played in AC St. Louis' April 3 exhibition match against the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer.

'This is a great accomplishment to see that Jeff Cosgriff is playing professionally,' Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. 'He had an excellent season with us in 2009, and it is paying dividends for him at AC St. Louis. To have 13 former players who are currently playing professionally is pretty remarkable. Most of them have their degrees or very close to it. That is a by-product of our culture as a team and a tribute to all of the great student-athletes that have come through this program.'

In 2009, his one season as a Bear, Cosgriff earned Pac-10 honorable mention accolades after a season in which he ranked second at Cal in points (16) and goals (6) and tied former frontline partner Andrew Wiedeman for second on the team in assists (4) after starting in all 18 games. The San Bruno, Calif., product also ranked second on the team in game-winning goals (2). Cosgriff earned a spot on the Team of the Week after scoring a hat trick in Cal's 4-1 win over Oregon State on Oct. 11 at Edwards Stadium.

Before transferring to Cal, Cosgriff played for three seasons at Santa Clara.

The other 12 former Bears in the pro ranks are the following: MLS - Calen Carr (Chicago Fire), Stefan Frei (Toronto FC), Andrew Jacobson (Philadelphia Union), Eric Kronberg (Kansas City Wizards), Luke Sassano (New York Red Bulls), Josh Saunders (Los Angeles Galaxy), Tyson Wahl (Seattle Sounders FC) and Andrew Wiedeman (FC Dallas); USSF Division 2 Pro League - Steve Purdy (Portland Timbers) and Troy Roberts (Rochester Rhinos); and Leo Krupnik (Maccabi Netanya, Israeli Premiere League) and Justin Myers (Hoa Phat Ha Noi, Vietnam First Division).

Cal finished with a 9-81 overall record (3-6-1 in the Pacific-10 Conference) in 2009.
