Fowler, Lastrapes Named to POY List of 25

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Freshman Kenzie Fowler and junior Brittany Lastrapes were both named to the list of 25 finalists for the 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, the organization announced today.
Fowler, a Tucson native, has had a superb first campaign, posting a 20-2 record with a 0.86 ERA heading into the second week of conference play. She is one of five freshman pitchers on the list.
Lastrapes, a two-time All-American, has already established herself as one of the most feared hitters in the game and touts a team-leading .450 average with 50 hits on the season.
This weekend, Arizona will go against two other Top 25 finalists in Washington's Danielle Lawrie, the reigning player of the year, and Jenn Salling.
The award will be announced at the opening of the NCAA 2010 Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. This award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of this award include UCLA's Stacey Nuveman, Florida State's Jessica Van der Linden, three-time winner Texas pitcher Cat Osterman, Tennessee's Monica Abbott, Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher and Washington's Danielle Lawrie.
The Top 25 list represents 20 schools and seven different NCAA Division I Conferences. The list is comprised of 10 seniors, seven juniors, one sophomore and seven freshman. The 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be chosen from the 25 finalists.

Just days before the start of post-season play, a list of 10 finalists will be named and released on May 12. The three finalists will be announced May 26th while the winner of the 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2010 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
