No. 12 Golden Bears Ground Ducks in 5-2 Victory

April 8, 2010

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 12-ranked California women's tennis team (15-4, 3-1 Pac-10) put up a 5-2 victory over Oregon (7-14, 1-6) at the Student Tennis Center on Thursday (April 8) as freshman Annie Goransson took out Emmanuelle Cor, 6-1, 6-1, at the fifth singles court. The Golden Bears opened the evening dual with the Ducks by securing the doubles point for the 17th time this season.

Cal's No. 73-ranked duo of junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz made the first splash of the day with an 8-2 win at the second doubles court over Cor and Patricia Skowronski. Goransson had a part in sealing the doubles point as well as she and fellow freshman Tayler Davis earned an 8-3 win over Molly McDevitt and Julia Metzger at court three. With the first point handed out, and the match knotted at five-games all on the top court, No. 7-ranked junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova headed into a tiebreaker with Trudie du Toit and Pavlina Smatova. The Ducks then flew off to win, 7-2, in the breaker.

The Bears fired the first shot in singles as Davis secured a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over McDevitt at court six. No. 3-ranked Juricova duplicated that score at the top court to earn her team-high 32nd singles victory of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Metzger. Goransson also posted a 6-1, 6-1 score to triple up and secure a 4-0 win for the Bears in her victory over Cor at No. 5 singles.

With the winner decided, matches at courts two, three and four went to a match tiebreaker after players split sets. After dropping her first set, 6-2, to Smatova at court two, 15th-ranked Cossou stormed back to take a 6-0 win in the second set. In her tiebreaker, she couldn't keep up with Smatova, who won, 10-7, to put the Ducks on the board. Oregon got its second point as Skowronski turned Siwosz away with a 10-6 win in their match tiebreaker at court four. Skowronski won the first set, 6-4, before Siwosz came back to take the second, 6-2. At court three, No. 44-ranked Andersson edged du Toit, 11-9, in her breaker for her ninth-straight singles victory.

The Bears head to the Evergreen State for a noon PT match against No. 25 Washington (10-4, 2-3 Pac-10) at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday, April 10.
