PULLMAN, Wash. - Patrick Claussen's pinch hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Matt Argyropoulos and gave Washington State a 6-5 win over No. 1 Arizona State in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday.

With the scored tied 5-5, Argyropoulos led off the ninth with a bloop double down the right field line against Arizona State (27-2, 5-2 Pac-10) reliever Mitchell Lambson (3-1). After Jay Ponciano's sacrifice bunt moved Argyropoulos to third, the Sun Devils called on right-hander Jordan Swagerty to face Washington State (16-10, 2-2 Pac-10) second baseman Cody Bartlett. Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut countered with the left-handed hitting Claussen and the sophomore delivered a shot up in the middle on the first pitch he saw.

'Patrick (Claussen) is the best teammate,' Marbut said. 'He will do whatever we ask of him and he got the chance to be the hero tonight. We have been resilient all year and played in a lot of close games. It is good win for our program.'

Arizona State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of WSU errors and a RBI-single from both Zack MacPhee and Riccio Torrez. The Cougars answered with four runs off Sun Devils' starter Seth Blair in the bottom of the inning.

Garry Kuykendall led off with a double and Brett Jacobs was hit by a pitch. Derek Jones flied out and Kuykendall took third. Matt Fanelli followed with a sacrifice fly to pull the Cougars within a run. Jacobs moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Shea Vucinich reached on a two-base error. Michael Weber plated Vucinich with a double and scored on a single by Argyropoulos.

Arizona State tallied three times in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead against WSU starter Chad Arnold. Austin Barnes and Raoul Torrez collected back-to-back doubles to open the inning and two batters later MacPhee homered over the fence in right field.

In the seventh, Bartlett singled with one out to end Blair's night and Kuykendall tripled on Lambson's first offering to tie the game 5-5.

Paris Shewey worked an inning of shutout relief for the Cougars and Adam Conley (3-1) blanked the Sun Devils in the ninth to earn the victory.
