Dawgs Drop Series Opener To Arizona, 7-2
April 9, 2010
SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team fell for just the second time in its last 11 games as Arizona beat the Huskies, 7-2, Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series.
Arizona starter Kurt Heyer (5-0) picked up the win, limiting the Huskies to two runs on four hits over six and two-thirds innings.
Washington (16-12 overall, 2-2 in the Pac-10) also saw its three-game win streak snapped in the loss. Arizona improved to 21-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Husky starter Geoff Brown (0-2) took the loss in a five-inning outing. He allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits.
Washington posted a run in the first to take the early lead. After Andy Smith was hit by a pitch and Caleb Brown singled, a sacrifice bunt from Jacob Lamb moved them up and Pierce Rankin grounded out to first to plate Smith to make it 1-0.
Arizona pulled even quickly, however, as left fielder Robert Refsnyder led off the second inning with a homer to right, knotting the score at 1-1. Bobby Rinard followed the homer with a double. He gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead when he stole third and the throw to the bag sailed high, allowing him to score.
In the fourth, Arizona right fielder Steve Selsky led off with his fifth homer of the season to increase the Cats' lead to 3-1.
In the fifth, after a pair of walks and a bunt, Arizona's Rafael Valenzuela tripled to right to drive in both. Jett Bandy followed with a single through the right side to make it a 6-1 Wildcats lead.
Washington, limited to only one base runner since the first, got back on the board in the sixth as Smith led off with a single and scored from first on a long double from Lamb.
Arizona scored it seventh run in the seventh as Bandy doubled and eventually scored on a pinch-hit single from Bobby Brown.
The series continues with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday and a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
NOTE: The Huskies' road game at Portland this coming week, originally scheduled for Tuesday (April 13), has been moved to Wednesday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m.
