No. 11 California in 11th Place After First Round of PING/ASU Invitational

The No. 11 California Golden Bears finished the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational in 11th place with an eight-over 296 at the par-72, 6230 yard Karsten Golf Course on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, Ariz. The host school, Arizona State, leads after the first round with a nine-under 279.
Sophomore Joanne Lee had the low round for the Bears, carding a two-under 70. Lee opened her round with a birdie on the par-five tenth, adding three more birdies on the afternoon, two on par 5's (17, 5) and one on the par-four second hole. She finished the first round in a tie for sixth place among individuals. Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda and Tulsa's Kristina Merkle tied for the day one individual lead at four-under (68).
Senior Roseanne Niven had one of her best rounds of the season, scoring a +2 74. Junior Pia Halbig also finished at two-over for the day. Sophomore Emily Childs and freshman Jackie Williams both logged six-over 78's.
The Bears will be back out on the course for the second round on Saturday, April 10. The tournament concludes on Sunday, April 11. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.
