Softball's Sixth Inning Rally Stopped Short against No. 8 Stanford

April 9, 2010

Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team’s (20-17, 1-3 Pac-10) sixth inning rally fell short as the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal (29-5, 3-1 Pac-10) held on for a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.

Stanford broke up the scoreless game with two runs in the top of the fourth on one hit and two Oregon State errors before scoring two more in the top of the fifth on three hits to take a 4-0 lead.

The Beavers answered back in a big way with a pair of long balls over left center. Junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) was first with a two-out solo shot before a walk later, freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) belted one on first pitch seen over deep left center to make it a one-run game with Stanford leading 4-3 going into the final inning.

After starting the seventh with two runners on and no outs, Stanford’s Maya Burns lined out to freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) at shortstop with Cavestany able to tag Jenna Rich out at second for the double play before a ground out preserved the score, giving the Beavers three outs left.

But the Beavers went three up, three down to close out the game in favor of the Cardinal.

Sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) is now 14-14 after being the pitcher of record in the complete game, fanning five. Stanford’s Teagan Gerhart earned the complete game win, improving to 21-4.

Oregon State will continue the series against No. 8 Stanford on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex. Follow these games live through GameTracker or on Twitter – OregonStateSB.
