Alexander Leads Stanford to Regional Title

Complete Release in PDF Format Shelley Alexander won two events to lead the Stanford women's gymnastics team to victory in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday and advance to the NCAA Championships for the fourth consecutive year.

Alexander, a junior captain, won the vault (9.95) and the balance beam (9.90) to help Stanford score 196.775 points and finish first among six teams. Stanford and Michigan (195.800) advanced out of that regional, one of six around the country.

They are among 12 teams that will compete in Gainesville, Fla., in the NCAA team preliminaries April 22. The top three in each six-team group advance to the Super Six finals the next day. Stanford has reached the Super Six twice in the past three years.

Alexander finished third in the all-around as Stanford gymnasts finished second (Carly Janiga) through fourth (Allyse Ishino).

Janiga was second on the uneven bars (9.90), and on the beam (9.875), and scored 39.525 in the all-around.

This will be Stanford's eighth trip to nationals in 10 years.
