Cal Women Beat Stanford in Big Meet, 84-79
April 10, 2010
BERKELEY - Deborah Maier won both the 1500 and 3000 meters and the 4x400-meter relay came through in the final event with a three-second triumph as the Cal women's track & field team defeated Stanford, 84-79, for its first victory in the Big Meet since 2000. On the men's side, Stanford prevailed for the fourth year in a row, 93.5 to 69.5.
'I didn't think much about it until two weeks ago,' director of track & field Tony Sandoval said, referring to the women's series. 'I didn't realize how long it has been.'
Stanford jumped out to an early lead in the women's competition before the Bears, on the strength of their distance corps, battled back. The teams were deadlocked at 79 points apiece heading into the 4x400 relay, meaning the winner of the race would take the meet.
Cal's line-up featured three freshmen - JAsmine Joseph, Angelica Weaver and Alima Kamara - plus junior Kayla Dixon. Joseph, who captured the 400 earlier in the day, staked the Bears to an early lead two-second lead after one lap and Cal held on through Kamara's anchor leg. Kamara leaned at the finish and the baton fell out of her hand just after she crossed the line, but the time of 3:42.82 stood. Stanford finished in 3:45.62.
'It was a great sense of excitement and joy to be beat Stanford for the first time in 10 years,' Kamara said. 'It was a great feeling, delightful. I made sure I crossed the line before I dropped the baton.'
Maier, the 2010 MPSF indoor champion in the 3000, and freshman Sofia Oberg led a 1-2 Cal finish in the 1500 meters, with Maier taking first in 4:26.92 and Oberg right behind in 4:28.45. In the 3000, Maier broke free of the pack early in her final lap and cruised to a nearly five-second victory over Stanford's Kathy Kroeger, 9:26.60 to 9:31.27.
'It was a tactical race,' the sophomore Maier said of the 1500. 'The plan was to get as many points for the team as possible. I was just sitting behind the Stanford girls and using them as wind blockers since it was so windy today. Both races felt really good. I felt really relaxed. I stuck to the strategy to sit and kick and it worked well. Just to see us scoring in every distance event shows that our distance program is on the rise.'
Added Sandoval: 'Deborah Maier is a stud. I knew she would be very tough. She and Sofia work very well together. There is nothing like the Big Meet to bring the best out of people.'
Sophomore Linda Oseso started off the Big Meet in the women's hammer by setting a PR in each of her first three attempts. After entering the meet with a career best of 169-2, she opened with a mark of 170-1, then improved to 177-11 and finally 178-11, which put her in fifth place on Cal's all-time performer list in the event. Oseso finished in second to Stanford's Jaynie Goodbody, while Cal junior Kiely Smith placed third.
In the men's hammer, Miles Palacios also set a PR with a distance of 189-5 on his fifth attempt. The mark was good for second place.
Freshman Malaina Payton set a PR in the women's long jump with a best of 19-10.75, an improvement of 5.5 inches from her previous best set at the Stanford Invitational in March, and placed fifth. The mark was just shy of the Cal freshman record of 20-0 by Sheila Hudson from 1986.
The Bears picked up valuable points in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase when Taylor Bryson sprinted past Stanford's Emma Miller-Bedell in the final 50 meters to take second in a PR 11:01.19, bettering her previous top time of 11:37.96 from last week's meet in Tucson, Ariz.
The Cal men swept the long jump, led by freshman Hammed Suleman's wind-aided 24-5.00. Mike Morrison took second with 23-6.00 and Chad Jones was third with 23-2.00. Suleman picked up his second victory of the day in the triple jump with a wind-aided 48-4.75.
Steve Sodaro won the men's steeplechase for the second year in a row with a six-second PR, finishing in 8:48.32 - the second-best mark in the country so far this year and lower than his winning time of 8:54.16 from last year. The mark broke the meet record of 8:48.3 set by Brian Pettingill of Stanford in 1985 and stands as the sixth fastest in school history.
Kimyon Broom led a 1-2 finish for the Bears in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in a season-best 13.18 seconds - a Big Meet record and the fastest time in the Pac-10 to date in 2010. Emani Truluck came in second with a PR 13.91, bettering her 14.02 set last year. The wind was just under the allowable at 1.9 meters per second.
Joseph claimed the women's 400 in 55.21 despite running into a strong head wind down the stretch, with Kamara second in 55.45.
Brian Norton had a big PR in the men's javelin with a throw of 178-4 to place second. His previous best was 169-11 in the event. Tom Blocker also PR'd in the men's 400 meters with a time of 48.32 in his second-place finish. In another runner-up finish for the Bears, Sebastian Sam ran a personal-best 1:48.79 in the men's 800.
Other notable performances on the day came from Weaver in the 400 hurdles, running a PR 1:00.81; Patrick Kowalsky, who captured the shot put with a mark of 56-1; and Oberg, who won the 800 (2:11.91) in addition to her runner-up finish in the 1500. Tracey Steward took first in the triple jump with a PR 41-7, Kristen Meister was victorious in the high jump at 5-8.50, and Kendall Morris prevailed in the discus with a PR of 155-4.
In all, the Bears won six men's events and 10 women's events. Cal leads the all-time men's series, 66-48-2, while Stanford holds a 20-11 edge in the women's event.
