April 10, 2010

PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 14 Washington State University women's rowing team executed its race plan against No. 9 Washington, led by the varsity eight which stroked to a 1.40 second victory at Montlake Cut in Seattle Saturday.

For the second consecutive race the Cougar varsity eight (Sarah Wolff, Kyann Martin, Hannah Rothstrom, Justine Galbraith, Allie Reilly, Katie Dick, Lisa Roman, Irena Neffeova, Corina Chilibeck - cox) defeated higher ranked crews; Harvard fell victim in San Diego, and today the Cougars preyed on the Huskies. The first women's race of the morning was a close race throughout, as WSU edged Washington by 1.40 seconds, with a time of 6:29.50.

'Varsity eight had a great race,' WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'They raced smart, and looked calm, secure and smooth.'

The Cougar second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four each finished behind the Huskies. Second varsity eight (Annie Eastwood, Danya Levesque, Corinna Sharick, Erica Lewis, Erika Jorgensen, Sarah Powell, Christina Kinck, Natasha Ostopovich, Lexi Ryman - cox) finished with a time of 6:42.6, approximately six seconds behind Washington.

In their first races of the season, the WSU varsity four (Katie Wollstein, Liz England, Crystal Martin, Lauren Johnson, Cayla Ravancho - cox) finished approximately 10 seconds behind the first place Washington boat, with a time of 7:31.9, while the second varsity four (Ann Hoag, Rachel McNeill, Tamarah Jonoubeh, Kasia Radamacher, Johanna Gerig - cox) finished with a time of 8:15.6, nearly 15 seconds behind the leading Washington boat.

The Cougar novice squads finished behind the Huskies as well. The novice eight (Erin Ranney, Jessica Start, Stephanie Hinkle, Alison Smith, Jennifer Hale, Josie Lallemand, Rachel Snodgrass, Kaitlan Foster, Heidi Kim - cox) and second novice eight (Brianne Gould, Liana DeMaris, Victoria Baldwin, Lindsey Nichols, Annelle Tomlinson, Teira Graham, Samantha Story, Alexandra Swayne, Whitney Welch - cox) finished with times of 7:03.2 and 7:17.1 respectively.

Next week the Cougars will travel to Gold River, Calif. to compete at the Lake Natoma Invite April 17-18. It will be the first time WSU has competed at the Lake Natoma Invite, though it regularly races at Lake Natoma for the Pac-10 Championships, and Lake Natoma is also the site of the 2010 NCAA Championships, hosted by WSU.
