Kizer's Slam Leads UW Past Arizona, 10-2
April 10, 2010
SEATTLE - Catcher Miles Kizer's fifth-inning grand slam propelled the Washington baseball team to a 10-2 win over Arizona Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (17-12 overall and 3-2 in Pac-10 play) picked up their 10th victory in their last 12 games. Arizona, which won 7-2 Friday at the UW, fell to 21-9 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Kizer, a junior college transfer from Phoenix, provided the biggest hit of the game. He came up with the bases full and two out in the fifth and drove a pitch the opposite way to right field for his second homer of the season to increase a Husky lead from 3-1 to 7-1.
Husky starting pitcher Andrew Kittredge (5-2) picked up the win. In his seven innings, he gave up two runs on six hits and two walks while fanning three.
Arizona starter Bryce Bandilla (3-3) was charged with five runs on five hits in his four and one-third innings for the loss.
Washington opened the scoring in the second inning. After Pierce Rankin walked and Aaron Russell singled to put runners at the corners, freshman Jacob Lamb looped a single to shallow left to score Rankin.
Later in the second inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, senior left fielder Bradley Boyer hit a full-count pitch into right for a single, scoring two runners to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Arizona got a run in the third and might have gotten more. With the bases loaded an one out, Josh Garcia singled to drive in one, but an infield pop and a fly to center ended with inning with the UW on top, 3-1.
After Kizer's grand slam stretched the Husky lead to 7-1, Arizona got one back when Rafael Valenzuela hit a two-out solo homer in the seventh.
Washington made it 10-2 in the seventh when right fielder Sean Meehan drove in Rankin with a two-out double down the left-field line. David Bentrott followed Meehan's double with one of his own, plating two more base runners.
The Huskies and Wildcats close out the three-game set Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
