Cavestany Leads Softball Slug Fest Win over No. 8 Stanford

April 11, 2010

Corvallis, Ore. – Freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) had a career best six RBI, batting in the go-ahead run, in the Oregon State softball team’s (21-18, 2-4 Pac-10) slug fest 10-8 win over the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal (30-6, 4-2 Pac-10) in the final game of the series on Sunday at the OSU Softball Complex.

Cavestany homered twice and tallied a two-RBI single for her six RBI. Seven other Beaver batters earned RBI on their Pac-10 season-high 13 hits. The Beavers outhit the Cardinal 13 to eight.

Stanford took a quick 6-0 lead, scoring three in the first and three more in the third. But the Beavers found their bats in the bottom of the third, scoring two on Cavestany’s home run over right field. Freshman Maggie Doremus (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with a double to right center.

The Cardinal tacked on another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but the Beavers made up more ground in the bottom half of the inning on Cavestany’s two-out bases loaded two-RBI single through the right side before moving into scoring position on the throw to make it 7-4 after four full.

Junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) homered with one out to start the six run fifth inning for the Beavers. Stanford made it 8-4 with another sacrifice fly in the first half of the inning, but a freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) double right after the homer continued the rally and prompted a Cardinal pitching change – bringing Jenna Rich in the circle. Doremus tied the school record for most doubles in a single game for the seventh time this season with her second of the game, scoring Kutz to make it 8-6.

Freshman Marina Demore (Vancouver, British Columbia) singled to score Doremus from second before senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) tripled on first pitch seen to right center to score Doremus, tying the game, with Stanford bringing starting pitcher Teagan Gerhart back in to pitch. Cavestany stepped back into the batter’s box and homered again over right field to give the Beavers the 10-8 edge after five.

Sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) earned the win after throwing three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out one, to improve to 15-14. Senior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) and Demore split the first four innings. Stanford’s Gerhart was charged with the loss after throwing 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs, all earned, including the final two.

Oregon State hosts No. 4 UCLA next for Strike Out Cancer weekend. The first game of the series begins on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex. Follow these games live through GameTracker or on Twitter – OregonStateSB.
