April 11, 2010
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The Stanford lightweights faced top-ranked Wisconsin and No. 2 Princeton at the Stanford Invitational this weekend. The Cardinal varsity defeated Princeton and Sonoma State to bounce back from a loss to Wisconsin, while the junior varsity boat also dropped its race to the Badgers but scored victories over Princeton and California.
Stanford's varsity and JV boats fell to Wisconsin in the first race of the weekend. In the varsity event the cardinal raced closely for the first third of the race before Wisconsin pressed into the lead. The JV boat had a similar race and fought to stay within nine seconds of the badgers.
The varsity and JV boats capped off the weekend with wins over the Princeton tigers. On Saturday the JV boat earned an early lead and stretched out to fifteen second win. The Cardinal varsity boat was tightly overlapped with Princeton for the first half of the race, then Stanford broke away gaining a four-second lead over the tigers.
'We learned a lot this weekend,' commented lightweight head coach Al Acosta. 'The JV gained experience and speed with each race. The varsity corrected mistakes they made against Wisconsin and rowed a solid race against Princeton. We're looking forward to building on these experiences in our races against Harvard and MIT next weekend.'
