April 11, 2010
Sophomore Jennifer Song fired a 69 to finish second while junior Lizette Salas was also under par to tie for sixth, leading the No. 4 USC women's golf team to third place in a hotly contested final round of the PING/ASU Invitational at the Karsten G.C. in Tempe, Ariz., on Sunday (April 11).
The Trojans, playing in their final regular-season event, finished at 6-under 858 (281-290-287), two back of come-from-behind winner UCLA (856) and one back of second-round leader and host Arizona State (857).
Song posted her fourth top 2 finish of the season at 8-under 208 (69-70-69), one back of the Bruins winner Stephanie Kono, who used a final-round 66 to eke out the win. Song's 69 give her 14 career rounds in the 60s, moving one ahead of teammate Belen Mozo for USC's all-time lead.
Song and Kono were in the final pairing of the event. The Trojan sophomore had four birdies on the day, including one on 15 that dropped her to 8-under and into a tie with Kono. Kono fell one back with a bogey on 16, but came back for the win thanks to birdies on the final two holes while Song carded pars.
As for Salas, the junior notched her fourth top 6 finish in the past five events at 5-under 211 (69-72-70). Salas was 1-over after 10 holes, but birdied three of her final seven holes.
Freshman Cyna Rodriguez turned in her second straight solid round and finished 37th at 5-over 221 (76-72-73).
Senior Stefanie Endstrasser tied for 46th at 8-over 224 (73-76-75). She birdied her final two holes to help USC's push at the end. Mozo, a senior, tied for 51st at 9-over 225 (70-80-75).
