April 12, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Pacific-10 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of April 5-11, 2010:
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: ASHTON EATON (Sr., Bend, Ore.). Won the 110 hurdles (13.64w), long jump (25-6) and won the lead leg on the second-place 4x400 meter relay team (3:08.41) to lead No. 3 Oregon to a victory over No. 2 Texas A&M, Washington, Illinois and Missouri at the Pepsi Team Invitational.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: RYAN WHITING, ARIZONA STATE (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa.). For the second meet in a row, Whiting won the shot put at home and did so with a mark that broke his own school record and improved upon the best throw so far in the world. At the 31st Sun Angel Track Classic, Whiting won the premiere shot put with a toss of 21.71m (71-02.75) to take the event by nearly 12 feet and move ahead of all collegiate competitors by 10-1.50. His toss also broke a 28 year-old venue record that Brian Oldfield set at the 1982 Classic with a winning mark of 21.52m. Whiting also competed in the Mesa Classic one day earlier and took second in the discus with a toss of 56.94m (186-10), which stands at the 10th-best in the NCAA right now.
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: AMBER PURVIS, OREGON (So., Hercules, Calif.). Won the 100 meters (11.38w) and the 200 meters (23.00w) and ran the second leg on Oregon's record-setting 4x100-meter relay (44.13) to lead No. 2 Oregon to a victory over top-ranked Texas A&M, No. 13 Washington and Missouri at the Pepsi Team Invitational.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: BROOKE PIGHIN, WASHINGTON (Jr., Port Alberni, B.C., Canada). Won the javelin throw at the Pepsi Team Invite with a season-best throw of 166-6 that was over 10 feet better than her nearest competitor. She moves up to sixth on the national list with the mark. It was a six-foot improvement over her season-opening mark at the Texas Relays just one week earlier.
