TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona sophomore catcher Jett Bandy is one of nine players added to the official watch list for the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza, The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced this week.
The 6-foot-4 Bandy, who has started all 32 of UA’s games, including 26 behind the plate, leads the Wildcats and ranks second in the Pacific-10 Conference with a .438 batting average. He has collected 58 hits and scored 38 runs, marks that rank second-best among league players. Bandy’s on-base percentage (.516) and slugging percentage (.672) rank third and fourth in the conference, respectively. He is one of three Wildcats with 30 RBI.
Earlier this season, Bandy earned his first Pac-10 Player of the Week award and helped guide the Wildcats to a 15-game win streak, which vaulted the club into the national rankings. The native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., has totaled a team-best 15 doubles and clubbed five homers on the season.
In 79 career games, Bandy has a .360 batting average with 105 base hits. He has belted 39 doubles in his one and a half seasons and roped nine homers. He has more career walks (29) than strikeouts (27), and already ranks in UA’s top-5 for career hit by pitches with 23.
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 19, 2010. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2, 2010 prior to the NCAA Regionals and Major League Baseball Draft. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 13th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on July 1, 2010.
Arizona (23-9, 4-5 Pac-10) returns home this weekend to host Washington State (18-11, 3-3 Pac-10). The three-game series will begin on Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium.
