Cal Volleyball to Host Informal Four-Team Tournament

BERKELEY - The California volleyball team will scrimmage squads from Saint Mary's College and San Jose State in a spring tournament at Haas Pavilion on Saturday, April 17, head coach Rich Feller announced today (April 15). A fourth squad, identified as Team X, and made up of former college players will round out the four-team tourney. The scrimmages will each be two timed sets of 20 minutes each. Score will only be kept by the participants. Admission is free and all six scrimmages are open to the general public. No floor seating will be available and all fans must sit in the upper sections of the bowl.
Cal will open the day against San Jose State at 11 a.m. PT while Saint Mary's takes on Team X. At approximately noon, Cal faces off against Saint Mary's with San Jose State taking on Team X. After a short break, the Bears will finish up the day with a match against Team X while the Gaels and Spartans play on the adjacent court.
Team X will be made up of former Cal middle hitters Mindi Wiley (2006-09) and Alicia Powers (2002-05) as well as former San Francisco outside hitter Brittanie Budinger (2000-02), former Oregon setter (1999-02) and Saint Mary's assistant coach Sydney Chute, and outside hitters Sarah Bronson (1996-99) and Danielle Shinn Hardcastle (1997-00) of the University of the Pacific.
Cal's spring roster features two-time All-American setter Carli Lloyd. She is flanked by outside hitter Tarah Murrey. The two were USA A2 teammates in the summer of 2009 and helped guide the Bears to their third consecutive NCAA regional final appearance last fall. Defensive specialist Meagan Schmitt is the third of three upperclassmen on the roster. Rounding out the ten-member team are six sophomores and one early-enrollee. In the middle, the Bears will have Shannon Hawari, Kat Brown and Tia Gaffen. Attacking from the opposite position is Correy Johnson; with Elly Barrett at setter and Robin Rostratter at defensive specialist. The first early-enrollee in Cal history is incoming freshman outside hitter Lauren Loerch.
