Dawgs Snap Bears' Win Streak With 7-3 Victory

April 16, 2010

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Washington baseball team picked up its 12th win its last 15 and broke California's eight-game winning streak as the Huskies beat the 21st-ranked Bears, 7-3, Friday afternoon at Evans Diamond.

Husky starter Geoff Brown (1-2) worked five and one-third innings for the victory. He allowed only one run on six hits and two walks while fanning four. Freshman Adam Cimber allowed two runs (one earned) over two and one-third innings and Jacob Clem recorded the final four outs to close it out.

Cal ace Erik Johnson (5-2) suffered his second loss of the season. He went six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits.

Washington (19-13 overall, 4-3 in the Pac-10) used a two-out rally to score the game's first run in the third inning. With two down and none on, David Bentrott singled and Bradley Boyer followed with a double to drive him in.

An inning later, Jacob Lamb singled and eventually scored on a two-out, infield single from Caleb Brown, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

In the meantime, Brown walked a tightrope on the hill for the Huskies as the Golden Bears (20-11, 6-4) were able to get two runners on base with one or no outs in each of the first four innings, but weren't able to get a runner home until the fifth when Cal catcher Chadd Crist hit a one-out solo homer.

Washington replied with three runs in the top of the sixth. After loading the bases on two walks and a single, the Huskies scored when DH Chase Anselment drew a one-out walk to force in one. The next batter, Miles Kizer, flied to right, scoring Troy Scott from third on a sacrifice fly, but Caleb Brown also came in from second as the Bears right fielder mishandled the ball after making the catch, increasing the Husky lead to 5-1.

The Huskies added a sixth tally in the seventh inning when Boyer led off with a walk and eventually scored on a two-out error.

Cal scored its second run in the seventh as Krist drove in Mark Canha with a two-out single one at bat after the Bears had a runner thrown out at the plate.

But Washington kept at it in the eighth. After a walk and a single put two aboard, Bentrott singled to drive in one, making it a 7-2 Husky lead. Cal got one back in the bottom of the eighth as Marcus Semien's two-out double drove in a run.

Boyer, Lamb and Bentrott each notched two hits for Washington. Cal's Krist went 4-for-5 with a homer, a triple and two RBI.

The Huskies and Bears continue the series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Sunday's series finale also begins at 1:00 p.m. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
