April 17, 2010
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Mike Barry is tied for second through two rounds of the Western Intercollegiate and the No. 23 Oregon State men's golf team is in sixth after the first day of play at Pasatiempo Golf Course.
Barry tallied eight birdies in the opening round as he shot a 4-under 66 to start the day and finished the day at 3-under (66-71) 137.
The Beavers are playing short-handed in the final tune-up before the Pac-10 Championships later this month after leaving three regulars in the lineup at home. Senior Diego Velasquez, who is the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, stayed behind in Corvallis due to illness, while senior Paul Peterson and sophomore Morten Madsen were also left behind to focus on Pac-10 Championship preparations.
The Western Intercollegiate is a two-day, 54-hole tournament, April 17-18. Thirty-six holes were played Saturday with the final round being played Sunday on the 6,615-yard, par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Course. It is a six-play, five-count tournament.
Oregon leads the tournament at 8-under (342-350) 692. Individually, Eugene Wong, from Oregon, leads at 5-under (65-70) 135.
