Stanford Lightweight Women Defeat Harvard
April 17, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - In a severe direct tailwind that built to 16 miles per hour and escalated in the last 1,000 meters with high standing waves, the Stanford varsity lightweights rowed to an openwater victory over Harvard.
Stanford moved out to a six-seat lead after the first minute of the race and pushed steadily out throughout.
'I was pleased with our determination to do what we set out to do,' commented head coach Al Acosta. 'The conditions were nasty, but everyone in the varsity did a good job working through it.'
In the JV race Harvard and Stanford raced evenly for the first quarter of the race. Harvard pushed in the second 500 and continued to slowly move out, crossing the finish line 7.5 seconds ahead while Stanford finished 20 seconds ahead of Harvard's novice eight.
'I think the conditions got the best of our JV crew today,' said Acosta. 'We'll regroup and race harder tomorrow.'
The Cardinal lightweights return to the water Sunday, closing the weekend against MIT.
