Cougars Finish Third at Lake Natoma

PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 13 Washington State University women's rowing team made its mark in its first appearance at the Lake Natoma Invitational, arriving at a third-place overall team finish Sunday. Led throughout the weekend by strong performances from the varsity eight and varsity four squads, WSU went into Sunday tied for second-place with Stanford and four team points behind event co-host California. The Cougars' final races of the regatta were against California and Stanford, who displayed why they are respectively ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the country.

The Cougar varsity eight and second varsity eight each finished third in its final race. After winning its two heats Saturday, the WSU varsity eight (Sarah Wolff, Kyann Martin, Hannah Rothstrom, Justine Galbraith, Allie Reilly, Katie Dick, Lisa Roman, Irena Neffeova, Corina Chilibeck - cox) finished approximately six seconds behind second-place Stanford, stroking to a time of 6:36.34.

'Overall we did what we needed to do,' WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'We found areas we need to improve and are excited to get back at it in practice.'

The WSU second varsity eight (Annie Eastwood, Danya Levesque, Corinna Sharick, Erica Lewis, Erika Jorgensen, Sarah Powell, Christina Kinck, Natasha Ostopovich, Lexi Ryman - cox) finished within one second of Stanford, earning a time of 6:41.81.

The varsity four (Katie Wollstein, Liz England, Crystal Martin, Lauren Johnson, Cayla Ravancho - cox) helped the WSU point total with its second-place finish in the final. It finished with a time of 7:30.67, approximately five seconds behind first-place California.

WSU defeated two of the four nationally-ranked opponents competing at the Lake Natoma Invitational, knocking off No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 17 Tennessee.

The Cougar novice eight crew (Erin Ranney, Jessica Start, Stephanie Hinkle, Alison Smith, Jennifer Hale, Josie Lallemand, Rachel Snodgrass, Kaitlan Foster, Heidi Kim - cox) placed second to California in its grand final, finishing with a time of 6:54.98.
