April 18, 2010
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Stanford men's rowing completed a successful weekend at the Stanford Invitational Sunday, as the I Eight, II Eight and Frosh Eight combined to capture eight out of 10 races, as the freshmen crew went a perfect 4-for-4 in its action.
'The racing this weekend has buoyed our belief in one another and cleared our vision that we are just gaining our stride,' said Stanford Director of Rowing and men's head coach Craig Amerkhanian. 'With the return of Sebastian Peterlin in a few weeks our speed and efficiency are returning at just the right time'.
'The guys raced hard throughout the weekend,' Freshman head coach Pete Giese added. 'The conditions were excellent and provided an opportunity for all of these young crews to really express themselves. Any weekend where these young oarsmen can race four times and get four victories is a good weekend.'
The Frosh Eight recorded victories by double-digit margins (in seconds) in three of its four races over the weekend, defeating Michigan by 19 seconds, Santa Clara's II Eight by just over 27 seconds and Wisconsin by a 13-second margin. The Cardinal rounded out its perfect weekend with a five-second victory over Oregon State.
Meanwhile, the I and II Eights each went 2-1 in its races, as the I Eight turned in victories over Michigan (by 10 seconds) and Santa Clara (23 seconds), but fell just short to Wisconsin. Racing with confidence and focus, the Cardinal was in a stroke for stroke battle with Wisconsin, but came in just three seconds behind.
The II Eight downed Michigan and Oregon State by 14.7 and 10.6 seconds, respectively. The crew suffered its only setback of the weekend against Wisconsin, coming in about 15 seconds behind the Badgers.
'We have one dual race left, against Cal in two weeks, and then it's timefor our Pac-10 and National Championship races,' Giese said. 'We were lucky to see some high quality competition this weekend which will undoubtedly help prepare usfor our future racing.'
The Stanford men will return to the water at Redwood Shores in two weeks, taking on California at The Big Row on May 1, which will also serve as Stanford Rowing's Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
