USC Completes Remarkable Comeback With 9-8 Win Over UC Santa Barbara
April 20, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Mike O'Neill scored the winning run Tuesday on a wild pitch from David Meals as the USC Trojans completed a remarkable rally in a 9-8 non-conference win over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The Trojans found themselves down 8-0 before responding with nine unanswered runs, including four in the bottom of the ninth to snap a six-game losing streak.
Marty Mullins was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI for UC Santa Barbara (16-15) while starter Greg Davis threw five scoreless innings and allowed three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
After UCSB built the 8-0 lead through the sixth inning, the Trojans started the rally in the sixth on Keith Castillo's RBI groundout. Kevin Roundtree hit a two-out, two-run single in the seventh for the 8-3 score. USC cut the lead to three runs with two in the eighth before starting the ninth-inning rally.
Left fielder Cade Kreuter led the ninth with a walk, followed by Meals hitting Joe De Pinto with a pitch and walking Roundtree to load the bases. Oropesa then lifted the two-run single to right, but Roundtree was thrown out at third on the relay. O'Neill walked and Castillo tied the game with an RBI single to right as O'Neill advanced to third. With Garret Houts at the plate, Meals uncorked the wild pitch that plated O'Neill and handed the Trojans the victory.
USC travels to Oregon for a Pac-10 Conference series this weekend, Friday-Sunday (April 23-25). Friday's game starts at 7 p.m. with a 5 p.m. start on Saturday and noon start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
