Cats Fall on Day 1 of Pac-10s

OJAI, Calif. –The No. 30 Arizona Wildcats had a rough first day at the 2010 Pacific-10 Championships falling in all six singles matches at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.
In the Championships Singles Flight the Wildcats struggled in all five matches. Hazi was the first to compete for the Wildcats. The senior dropped his match against Stanford’s Richard Wire 6-4, 6-4.
Embry faced Washington’s Kyle McMorrow dropping both sets, 6-1 6-3 and Malo fell to Stanford’s number four seed Alexander Clayton 6-4, 6-3.
Metham faced the number one seed of the Championships Singles Flight, Robert Farah of USC for the second consecutive year. Last season, the two faced each other in the second round of 16 in the Championships Singles Flight where Farah won 6-2, 6-3. Similar to last year, Farah notched set one 6-2 and the New Zealand native dropped set two 6-1.
Goldman was the last to compete in the Singles Flight for the Wildcats today. The junior fell to Maxime Tabatruong in two straight sets, 6-3 6-2.
In the Invitational Singles round of 32, freshman Frank Chen edged out Oregon’s Duncan MacDonald-Korth in the first set 7-5, but the Oregon junior came back sweeping set two 6-0 and topping Chen 6-1 in the third set. For Chen, it was his first match action since the fall.
Up Next: The Wildcats will look to rebound in doubles competition on Friday. The Men's Championship Doubles Round of 16 will begin with Wildcat duo of Ravid Hazi and Borja Malo competing against Daniel Nyuyen and JT Sundling of USC at 9 a.m. Arizona’s other doubles match will feature Wildcat pair Geoff Embry and Pat Metham against Oregon’s Alex Cornelissen and Marco Verdasco at 10 a.m.
