Golden Bears Put Four in Quarters at Pac-10 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - California women's tennis juniors Marina Cossou and Mari Andersson each earned singles quarterfinal berths at the 2010 Pac-10 Tennis Championships on Thursday, April 22. In all, the Golden Bears claimed eight victories out of 12 singles matches at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. As the third-seeded player in the singles championship draw, No. 17-ranked Cossou posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sarah Landsman of Arizona in the first round before she pulled out a three-set victory against Stanford's Carolyn McVeigh, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals.
No. 34-ranked Andersson held the sixth seed and put up two straight-set victories for her 28th and 29th singles wins of the year. Andersson took out USC's Sarah Fanslfer, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32 and earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 77 Lindsay Burdette of Stanford in the round of 16. Senior Kasia Siwosz advanced out of the first round by defeating No. 102-ranked Valeria Pulido of USC in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. SIwosz ran into No. 67 Stacey Tan of Stanford in the round of 16 and was eliminated, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Annie Goransson wasn't able to get past the first round as she fell, 6-3, 7-5 to seventh-seeded and No. 32-ranked Mallory Burdette or Stanford.
Cossou will draw Elisabeth Fournier of Oregon and Andersson will take on Hannah James of Arizona State in noon PT matches at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club on Friday, April 23.
The Bears also got three wins in the singles invitational bracket as freshmen Tayler Davis and Nelly Radeva each advanced to the quarterfinal. Radeva defeated Patricia Skowronski or Oregon, 7-5, 6-2, to move into the round of 16 where took out USC's Leyla Entekhabi, 6-3, 7-6, with a 7-2 score in the tiebreaker. As the third seed, Davis received a first-round bye before taking out Stanford's Jennifer Yen in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. On the brink of elimination, Davis earned a 7-4 win in the second-set tiebreaker before finishing off Yen, 6-2, in the third. Sophomores Stephany Chang and Catalina Visico couldn't escape the first round of the invitational draw as Chang fell, 6-3, 7-5, to Oregon's Emmanuelle Cor and Visico dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Arizona State's Ashlee Brown.
In the singles invitational quarterfinal, Radeva will face second-seeded Samantha Smith of Washington and Davis will draw Arizona State's Sianna Simmons in noon PT matches on Friday, April 23.
Doubles matches begin with round of 16 action at 10 a.m. PT on Friday as Cossou and Siwosz face Oregon's duo of Pavlina Smatova and Trudie du Toit, As the second-seeded team in the invitational bracket, Davis and Goransson open up with Natalie Dillon and Yen of Stanford at 10 a.m. while Chang and Radeva draw Lea Jansen and Marina Nicolas of Washington State. All doubles quarterfinals will start no later than 3 p.m. PT at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
