April 22, 2010
OJAI, Calif. - The Pac-10 Women's Tennis Championships opened up with the first two rounds of singles play today at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club, and the Huskies advanced two women into the quarterfinals of the invitational draw. Aleksandra Malovic and Samantha Smith received first round byes and then won their second round matches in straight sets.
Malovic and Smith were the top-two seeds in the invitational draw. Malovic, a semifinalist in the Invitational last year took a step back in that direction with a 6-4, 6-2 win over USC's Lyndsay Kinstler this afternoon. It is the senior's fifth-straight victory, all coming against Pac-10 opponents, and her 19th win of the season.
Smith also received a bye into the round of 16, where she handled Arizona's Debora Castany, 6-4, 6-1. That much-needed win snapped a seven-match losing streak for Smith who had run off seven-straight wins previously.
Malovic will face UCLA's Carling Seguso in the quarterfinals on Friday while Smith will take on Nelly Radeva of California.
Washington had just two entries in the main draw, and both drew two of the top players in the conference. Senior Joyce Ardies nearly knocked off No. 4-seed Alison Ramos of USC, who is ranked 33rd nationally. They split the first two sets, with Ardies winning the second set 6-2, but Ramos pulled out the win, 6-4, in the third. Junior Lina Xu faced the top seed, fourth-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford, and the Cardinal got the 6-1, 6-2 win.
Doubles play will also begin Friday, with Ardies and sophomore Denise Dy entered as the No. 4-seeds in the main draw.
