Cats Come Up Short at Pac-10s
April 23, 2010
OJAI, Calif. – The second day of the Pacific-10 Championships proved to be a slightly better day for the No. 30 University of Arizona men’s tennis team as they picked up one doubles win at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. The Wildcats came up short though and will now turn their focus to the NCAA tournament.
“We are going to work hard and get ourselves ready for the NCAA Championships,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “That’s our ultimate goal and we will be ready.”
In the Men’s Championship Doubles Round of 16, senior Ravid Hazi and junior Borja Malo teamed up to take on USC’s duo of Daniel Byuyen and JT Sundling. The USC duo though was too much for the Wildcat pair and swept the match 8-0 to advance to the second round.
However, Arizona’s other doubles duo of Geoff Embry and Pat Metham were victorious in their first match of the tournament to advance to the second round. The pair battled Oregon’s Alex Cornelissen and Marco Verdasco and notched the 8-4 Wildcat win.
In the quarterfinals round, Embry and Metham faced USC’s top-seeded duo of Robert Farah and Steve Johnson. Embry and Metham fought hard, but it was the top duo nabbing the 8-4 victory to advance to the semifinals.
