Farah and Nguyen Set Up For Pac-10 Singles Semis

April 23, 2010

OJAI, CALIF. - The No. 5 USC men's tennis team has a solid set of semifinal matches on the docket for tomorrow, with Trojans Robert Farah and Daniel Nguyen securing slots in singles semis at the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Championships in Ojai, Calif. Farah will make it a full day of action as he and partner Steve Johnson are taking a trip to the doubles semifinals in the afternoon out at Ojai.

Robert Farah continued his straight-set streak through the Pac-10 singles competition with a smooth 6-1, 6-2 victory over Oregon's Alex Cornelissen in today's quarterfinals. That puts the top-seeded Trojan up against Stanford's No. 3 seeded Ryan Thacher for the pair's first clash of the season. Farah and Thacher are scheduled to square off in their semifinal tomorrow at 11 a.m., with Farah making his third straight Pac-10 semifinal appearance and carrying a nine-match singles win streak into tomorrow's competition.

USC's Peter Lucassen rolled into today's competition having lost just three games in his two matches yesterday, but the Trojan came up against a tough No. 2 seeded Bradley Klahn - defending Pac-10 Singles Champion - in today's quarterfinals. Klahn got past Lucassen today with a 6-3, 6-2 decision. That puts Klahn up against USC's own Daniel Nguyen, who pinned up a ferocious three-set comeback win in his quarterfinal match today. Nguyen dug in and pulled away from UCLA's Matt Brooklyn with a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0 victory, putting the sophomore in the semifinals tomorrow with senior teammate Farah on the other side of the bracket. Nguyen carries a 15-match win singles winning streak into tomorrow's semi.

In doubles action, the top-seeded Trojan pair of Robert Farah / Steve Johnson rattled off two strong wins to make a leap into tomorrow's semifinals. Farah/Johnson upended Stanford's Kandath/Lin 8-2 in the morning before taking down Arizona's Embry/Metham 8-4 to give the Trojan pair a 10-match win streak together as they settle in for tomorrow's semifinals. The USC duo will face No. 3 seed McMorrow/Nedunchezhiyan of Washington in that match.

Meanwhile, Daniel Nguyen and JT Sundling both pulled double duty on the day, making short work of Arizona's Hazi/Malo in an 8-0 shutout to start the day's doubles play. In the afternoon, Nguyen/Sundling went up against fourth-seeded Inbar/Meister of UCLA and had their run halted with the Bruin pair's 8-6 win over the Trojan duo.

In Invitational singles play, freshman JT Sundling fought through a tight quarterfinal match to claim a place in tomorrow's semis. Sundling edged out Stanford's Walker Kehrer 7-6 (6), 7-5 to earn a face-off with Washington's Alex Rosinski in the invitational semifinals. Teammate Daniel Gliner battled through a three-setter with UCLA's Alex Brigham, falling 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in his invitational quarterfinal match today.

Invitational doubles pairings saw Gliner and Matt Keckipair up to success with an 8-5 win over Oregon's Clissold/Mayeda. Gliner/Kecki will face Stanford's Hirshman/Kehrer in the invitational semifinals tomorrow afternoon. Joel Giger and Ben Lankenau also teamed up in invitational doubles today, falling 8-4 to Obenaus/Rosinski of Washington.
