Gymnastics Journey: Six Shooters

April 23, 2010

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Stanford has returned. That's right baby, back in the Super Six!!! Wow, what an exciting day. The day started off slow, as we spent most of the morning relaxing and preparing for the night's competition. We began getting ready early in the afternoon and by the time we stepped on the bus we looked ready to dominate! On our way to the arena we of course had another dance party on the bus, which totally got us pumped for the meet. When we walked into the arena to start stretching we all had a feeling that the night was going to be a great one, and the beginning of something special was for sure going to happen. Warm-ups were awesome and everything felt very natural and easy.

We started the meet off on floor, one of our strongest events of the year, and after a jittery start, the back of the line-up picked it up and brought in some awesome scores. Everyone's performances rocked and shout out to A-Mo who got us back on track. We then moved to vault and got the most amazing lead-off hit from Blur (yes, a career high, yeah Blur!) Blur's vault energized everyone and we had another strong vault rotation. We played a quick round of 'word association' (a game where two people say a word, and then two different people think of a word similar to the former two and say it on three) in the vault corral while the other teams were finishing. We then headed to the bye where, yet again, we passed the time dancing and playing games. No one can possibly have more fun on the floor of a meet than SWG does.

Our next rotation was bars, and we can definitely say that we are a tough team. After another slow start, Peach got the ball rolling and picked things up with her clean lines and beautiful dismount. JP had an awesome set in the anchor spot to solidify a decent bar total. Our final rotation of the night was beam and we knew that in order to advance we had to lay everything out there on the floor. While it wasn't our best performance, we hung in there and proved we are deserve to be in the finals and a team that is going to fight for every tenth.

We ended the meet on a bye which meant that when we headed to the locker room we weren't sure if we had qualified to move on, but we knew it was going to be close. That was the longest bye ever!!! Every time the locker room door opened every single person's eyes turned the door with the hopes of seeing someone who could tell us some good news. When we found out we made it there was screaming, crying, hugging, and laughing. The most amazing thing about tonight was that even though we did not have our best performance, we managed to stay strong and move on. We are absolutely looking forward to improving in the Super Six and truly giving everything we have in the finals.

Tonight has been one of the most amazing nights in our lives and we can happily say we have moved on to round 2 of the NCAA Championships where we will contend for a national title.
