No. 18 Oregon Wins Pac-10 Series Opener Over USC, 12-2
April 23, 2010
EUGENE, Ore. - Tyler Anderson struck out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings Friday as the No. 18 Oregon Ducks took the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series with the 12-2 win over the USC Trojans in front of 2,832 at PK Park. Anderson allowed two runs (two solo home runs by USC's Cade Kreuter) on four hits with three walks while KC Serna led the Ducks' attack with a 3-for-5 night and four RBI.
Oregon improved to 26-12 overall and 7-6 in Pac-10 Conference play while USC falls to 16-21 on the season, dropping its eighth straight conference game for a 2-11 mark.
The Ducks got to USC starter Andrew Triggs early, scoring two runs in the first on four straight singles with two outs. Matt Hart's throwing error allowed J.J. Altobelli to reach base to lead off the second as Oregon would score three unearned runs for the 5-0 lead on RBI singles from Serna, Danny Pulfer and Steven Packard. Packard finished with a 3-for-4 night for the Ducks as Triggs allowed seven runs on 11 hits in five innings.
With the 6-0 deficit, Kreuter launched his first homer of the game to center in the fifth, but the Ducks answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout from Curtis Rauliniatis. After Kreuter hit his second homer off Anderson in the seventh to left, the Ducks came back again with two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to complete the scoring.
The series continues tomorrow at 5 p.m. with a noon start on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Cade Kreuter hit two home runs in a game for the second time this season (March 21 at Pacific), going 2-for-3 on the night...Oregon beat USC for just the third time in 22 games...all three Oregon wins have come in Eugene (previous wins were during the 1967 season)...this is USC's first trek to Eugene since 1969.
