UCLA Shuts Out Cardinal, 10-0, In Five Innings

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 6 UCLA Bruins shut out the 10th-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 10-0, in five innings, Friday, at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal drops to 4-6 in the Pac-10 and 30-10 overall, while the Bruins improve to 5-5 in the conference and 31-9 on the year.
Junior Ashley Chinn took the loss for the Cardinal, falling to 6-4 on the season. The Belmont, Calif., native threw 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two batters. Freshman Caitlin Breen made her third appearance of the season, giving up six runs on 10 hits in 2.1 innings of work. UCLA's Donna Kerr picked up the win in the circle, improving to 16-5 overall.
The Bruins scored at least one run in each of the five innings in the series opener. Of UCLA's 15 hits, seven went for extra bases, including three home runs.
Stanford's lone hit of the game came in the Cardinal's first at-bat as senior Alissa Haber singled through the left side. Haber was hit by a pitch in her second at-bat, and was the only Stanford player to reach a base. Haber recorded two stolen bases on the night.
The Cardinal and Bruins will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday, Apr. 24. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Smith Family Stadium
