#6 UCLA Powers Its Way Past #10 Stanford
April 24, 2010
The Bruins win their fifth straight to improve to 32-9 overall and 6-5 in Pac-10 play, while the Cardinal fall to 30-11 and 4-7 in league action.
Burney went 2-for-3, Yudin drove in three and Harrison had two runs batted in. Four of the Bruins' seven runs were scored with two outs.
Junior Whitney Baker improved to 2-1 on the season, striking out three and allowing five hits, three runs and two walks in four innings. She fanned one in each of the first three innings and retired the side in order in the third. Baker also set down seven of the final eight batters she faced. Senior Megan Langenfeld pitched three innings of hitless relief, striking out one, for her second save of the season. She retired the last seven of the game and nine of the 10 batters she faced.
Stanford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Alissa Haber and Ashley Hansen had back-to-back singles to start things off and both moved up a base on a sacrifice by Shannon Koplitz. Jenna Rich followed with a single to left to plate Haber to make it 1-0 and an illegal pitch called on Baker with Rosey Neill at the plate plated Hansen for the Cardinal's second run.
The Bruins got one back in the second. Yudin was hit to open the inning and was pinch-run for by junior Grace Murray, who advanced to second one out later on a single to left by Burney. Freshman Charlotte Dolan then singled up the middle to bring in Murray to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Stanford raised its lead back up to a pair with a run in the bottom of the second. With one out, Sarah Hassman singled up the middle, stole second and scored one out later on a double to left by Hansen to make it 3-1.
It was all Bruins after that though, as they used the long ball to take the lead. The first two batters of the top of the third were retired, but Langenfeld walked and Harrison hit her ninth home run of the season to right to even the score at three.
In the fourth, Burney led off the inning with her team-best 12th homer of the season to center to give the Bruins a 4-3 advantage. Another long ball in the fifth made it 6-3. With one out, Langenfeld walked and was pinch-run for by junior Amy Crawford, who came home one out later on Yudin's fourth home run of the season to right-center to make it a three-run lead.
UCLA added an insurance run in the seventh. The Bruins started the inning with a walk from junior Monica Harrison and a double by Langenfeld. One out later, Yudin lifted a scoring fly ball to center to plate Harrison to make it 7-3.
The Bruins and the Cardinal close out their three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
