SPOKANE, Wash. - The No. 10 Washington State University women's rowing team overcame strong crosswinds to defeat Gonzaga and Western Washington, Saturday at Silver Lake in Spokane.

The varsity eight (Sarah Wolff, Kyann Martin, Hannah Rothstrom, Justine Galbraith, Allie Reilly, Katie Dick, Lisa Roman, Irena Neffeova, Corina Chilibeck - cox) continued its strong racing, finishing nearly five seconds ahead of Gonzaga with a time of 6:45.78. Gonzaga placed second with a time of 6:50.38, while Division II's top-ranked team, Western Washington, came in third with a time of 7:00.10.

'We raced well today,' WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere said. 'We're always happy to go race our neighbors up in Spokane. It was also fun to have Western Washington there and compete in a three-boat race.'

The Cougar second varsity eight, varsity four and second novice eight also finished first Saturday. The second varsity eight (Ericka Jorgensen, Danya Levesque, Corinna Sharick, Erica Lewis, Liz England, Christina Kinck, Christina Martin, Natasha Ostopovich, Lexie Ryman - cox) finished with a time of 7:01.83, nearly seven seconds ahead of Gonzaga.

In the varsity four race, WSU A (Katie Wollstein, Kasia Rademacher, Lauren Johnson, Annie Eastwood, Cayla Ravancho - cox) finished first with a time of 7:54.05, followed by WSU B (Tamara Jonoubeh, Rachel McNeil, Leah Smith, Ann Hoag, Johanna Gerig - cox) with a time of 8:04.87.

The second novice eight finished over 15 seconds ahead of Gonzaga, clocking in at 7:36.05. Due to boat trouble caused by the strong crosswinds at the start, the WSU B boat did not race. WSU's novice eight was just beat out by Gonzaga, clocking a time of 7:22.69, just behind the Bulldogs' 7:22.11 finish. The Cougars were seven seconds ahead of the Vikings (7:29.50).

The Cougars will host their lone home regatta of the spring as No. 18 Oregon State comes to town Saturday, May 1. The regatta will take place at Wawawai Landing and is slated for an afternoon start. WSU will be celebrating 20 years of rowing with events taking place all weekend. For more information on next weekend's events, check out
