BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 1 Washington softball team dropped a five-inning mercy rule contest to No. 13/17 California on Saturday, with the Bears running away with a 9-1 victory at Levine-Fricke Field.

The Huskies (36-5, 8-3) gave senior Danielle Lawrie a much-needed rest after the ace threw 173 pitches in a 10-inning shutout win on Friday. Freshman Baily Harris (9-3) got her first career Pac-10 start and the Bears used an eight-run second inning to even the three-game series.

UW managed six hits in the game and scored the first run, going up 1-0 in the first before Cal tied it up in the bottom of the first, then cruised to the win thanks to their big second inning.

Jenn Salling and Kimi Pohlman combined to go 4-for-5 from the top two spots in the lineup, with Salling going 2-for-3 with a run and Pohlman going 2-for-2 to extend her hitting streak to a career-high 10 games. She has been on fire in conference play, batting a team-best .447 (17-for-38) with five multi-hit games, including three in a row. Over the last three games, she is batting .700 (7-for-10).

Freshman Shawna Wright also had a pair of hits for UW, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

The Huskies got on the board first when Salling and Pohlman led off the game with back-to-back singles. While Cal starter Valerie Arioto looked like she might escape after getting back-to-back strikeouts, the Huskies then pulled off a double steal and Wright followed with an RBI single to put UW up 1-0.

But Cal would come right back and tie up the game in the bottom of the first on a home run by Arioto.

The Golden Bears (34-12, 5-6) would then break things open with an eight-run second, banging out six hits in the inning and drawing three walks.

The Huskies put a pair of runners on in the third but were unable to close the gap and Arioto shut down the Dawgs the rest of the way to improve to 16-6.

The two teams will wrap up their season series on Sunday at Noon.
