April 24, 2010

OJAI, Calif. - Less than three weeks into their career as doubles partners, and Samantha Smith and Aleksandra Malovic have reached the invitational doubles final at the Pac-10 Championships, as they defeated a Cal duo on Saturday at Libbey Park.

The Husky tandem, which has played No. 3 doubles just the past two weeks, won their third match over the last two days to make Sunday's final, where they will play UCLA's Hoffpauir and Seguso at 11 a.m.

In the semis, Malovic and Smith defeated Cal's Stephany Chang and Nelly Radeva, 8-6.

In the main doubles draw, the Huskies had two more teams still alive in the semifinals, but both were stopped short of the final by two of the top-five teams in the country. Joyce Ardies and Denise Dy, ranked 16th nationally, fell 8-5 to the top-seeds Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette of Stanford, who rank fifth in the NCAA. In the other semi, Venise Chan and Lina Xu were eliminated 8-0 by the second-ranked team of Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack of UCLA.
