Cats Take Series with Run-Rule Win

April 25, 2010

TUCSON -- Lini Koria's grand slam highlighted a five-run third and helped push No. 3-ranked Arizona to a 9-1 victory and series sweep against Oregon State in Pac-10 softball action Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Kenzie Fowler (27-5) scattered three hits in four innings of pitching for the victory, which improved Arizona to 38-7 overall and 8-4 in league play. OSU dropped to 22-24 and 2-10. Arizona remained in at least a tie for second depending on the outcome of the Oregon-ASU game in Tempe.

The Cats picked up a pair of unearned runs in the first. Brittany Lastrapes reached on a two-base error by center fielder Ashley Sanchez, and after a walk to Lauren Schutzler, moved up on a bunt single by K'Lee Arredondo. Stacie Chambers grounded to first to drive in a run. Two walks issued by OSU's Paige Hall (16-19) brought in Schutzler with two outs.

Arredondo singled to lead off the third, Chambers walked and Brigette Del Ponte had a bunt single to load the bases and chase Hall. Koria blasted a shot to center off reliever Kelly Dyer, her 13th home run, to make it 6-0.

An out later, second baseman Victoria Kemp hit her first home run of the year to extend the lead.

OSU's Hall, now the designated player, socked her 14th round-tripper of the year with two outs in the fourth. But UA answered, with Chambers lining a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-1.

Sarah Akamine pitched the fifth for UA, and allowed a single by leadoff batter Lea Cavestany.

Notes: The game drew a sun-washed crowd of 2,403 and kept UA's average above 2,000 per game, its current second-best attendance in history... The Wildcats travel to Berkeley next week for a three-game series against Califorinia Friday through Sunday... Infielder Kristen Arriola was hit on the head by a bad bounce in pre-game line drills and did not play, with Kemp getting the start.
