Husky Pair Falls In Pac-10 Final
April 25, 2010
OJAI, Calif. - Washington's recently formed No. 3 doubles tandem of Aleksandra Malovic and Samantha Smith fell just two games shy of the invitational Pac-10 doubles title today as the Pac-10 Championships wrapped up at The Ojai. The Huskies made doubles the focal point heading into the weekend and have to be very encouraged by the results.
Malovic and Smith won three times against teams from Oregon, USC, and California, before finally dropping a close one this afternoon to UCLA's Stephanie Hoffpauir and Carling Seguso, 8-6. The two were bidding to win the first Pac-10 title of any kind under head coach Jill Hultquist.
Washington shifted its doubles lineups two weeks ago prior to its match against Stanford. Malovic and Smith lost their first two matches before beating Washington State just last weekend for their first win. Now they have much more success to draw on heading towards the NCAA Championships, which are up next for UW with Regionals on May 14-15 at a site to be determined.
In addition to Smith and Malovic, each of UW's top two doubles teams advanced to the main doubles semifinals before both were knocked out yesterday by teams ranked in the top-five nationally. This season Washington went 10-0 when winning the doubles point, so grabbing the early lead will be of big importance moving ahead in the postseason.
