Ryan Mango Places Third At ASICS U.S. Open Championships

STANFORD, Calif. - Ryan Mango tallied a 5-1 record at the ASICS U.S. Open Championships in the Greco Roman division at 55 KG (121.25 pounds) in Cleveland, Ohio to capture a third-place finish in the event.
On the second day of the tournament, Mango was 3-0 to finish third behind his older brother Spenser, who won the event with a 0-1, 1-0, 2-0 decision over Army's Jermaine Hodge.
Mango defeated David Armstrong, 1-0, 7-0, before pinning Paul Tellgren in 1:51 to advance to the third-place match. There, Mango used a 3-1, 6-0 decision over Max Nowry to complete his undefeated day.
Four other Cardinal wrestlers are competing in the FILA Jr. Nationals Freestyle division at the ASICS U.S. Open Championships. Bret Baumbach, Timmy Boone, Kyle Meyer and Richard Kessler are also representing the Cardinal Wrestling Club in Cleveland.
Baumbach, wrestling at 66 KG (145.5 pounds), was 2-1 on the first day of competition. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native defeated Luis Ramos, 6-0, 2-0, and then pinned Vinny Torres in 31 seconds to advance to face Dylan Alton. Baumbach fell 3-0, 8-0 to Alton to drop into the consolation bracket. He will now face Mike Nevinger on Sunday.
Timmy Boone also posted a 2-1 record on the first day of the FILA Jr. Nationals. Boone dropped his opening match to Mark Meyer, 0-3, 4-3, 4-0 at 70 KG (154.25 pounds). However, he bounced back to record a 6-0, 3-0 decision over Maryland's Eric Beverly and a 3-0, 4-1 decision against Paul Liguori.
Wrestling at 74 KG (163 pounds), Stanford's Kyle Meyer was 1-2 in the draw. He fell in a 3-0, 7-5 decision to Tyler Sheridan in his first match of the day. He then defeated Navy's Jacob Shalles, 5-2, 1-3, 6-0, to advance. Unfortunately, he dropped a 2-1, 6-1 decision to Corey Leer to end his tournament.
Richard Kessler, competing at 96 KG (211.5 pounds), lost a 1-0, 1-0 decision to Maryland's Christian Boley to drop into the consolation bracket. Up next, Kessler will take on Mike McKeever.
