SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Ryan Tregoning's solo shot in the seventh broke a 4-4 tie Tuesday as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the USC Trojans, 5-4, in a non-conference game. Four UCSB pitchers combined to throw eight scoreless innings after USC all four of its runs in the first inning.
Tregoning finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while Gunnar Terhune went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI for UCSB (18-17). The Gauchos responded after last Tuesday's 9-8 loss at Dedeaux Field after UCSB led 8-0 before USC rallied for the 9-8 victory.
Connor Whalen (1-0) got the win, allowing only one hit in two innings while Nick Loredo got his first save of the season with two no-hit innings.
Ricky Oropesa went 2-for-4 with one RBI in the loss for the Trojans (17-23).
The Trojans used six hits off UCSB starter Greg Davis to build the 4-0 lead. Mike O'Neill doubled to lead off the game, followed by singles from Joe De Pinto and Oropesa. Alex Sherrod and Kevin Roundtree capped the scoring with RBI singles.
With two outs in the third, Sean Williams singled and Matt Valaika followed with a short pop-up that was misjudged by Oropesa at first base to put runners at first and second. Trevor Whyte then singled to center to put the Gauchos on the scoreboard, followed by Tregoning's RBI single for the 4-2 USC lead. In the fourth, Terhune tied the game with his second homer of the season, hitting a two-run shot to left off reliever Shuhei Fujiya. Tregoning later recorded his first home run of the season with the game-winner down the left field line as the Gauchos evened the two-game season series between the two schools.
