Bears Battle Cardinal for Schwabacher Cup This Saturday
April 28, 2010
The No. 2-ranked California men's crew returns to Redwood Shores this week for the regular season finale against No. 13 Stanford in the Big Row on Saturday, May 1. The Golden Bears and the Cardinal will be competing for the Schwabacher Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the annual varsity 8+ race. Cal was victorious last year after Stanford snapped a 17-year losing streak in 2008. Races begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Cal has already defeated Stanford this season when they met at the 2010 opener at the San Diego Crew Classic back in March.
'The varsity raced well on Saturday; we have had good work outs this week, and weare excited to face Stanford this weekend in the Big Row.' said head coach MikeTeti. 'Our guys are ready for Stanford this weekend. Craig Amerkhanian is a great coach, and his rowers are talented and motivated. Our squad is looking forward to having an aggressive race, and progressing into the championship portion of the 2010 season.'
Cal Novices Look to Top Stanford Once Again
In the freshman event, Cal is looking for its second win against Stanford, after the Bears beat the Cardinal at the San Diego Crew Classic in March, 6:13.7-6:17.67.
'We know they have speed. We know they are well-coached, and we know they are dangerous.' said assistant coach Michael Vallarelli. 'We are coming to Redwood Shores to put up the fastest time possible in every event. We know that Stanford is looking to do the same thing.'
Last Year Against Stanford
Cal's fourth-ranked varsity 8+ defeated Stanford's third-ranked boat to lead a three-boat sweep of the rival Cardinal in the 2009 Big Row. The Bears defeated Stanford, 5:41.54- 5:46.08, to claim the Schwabacher Cup. The Bears also won the second varsity 8+ race, 5:48.8-6:00.49, and novice 8+ event, 6:00.23-6:04.63.
A Look at the Cal-Stanford Rivalry
Since 1902, Cal leads the all-time series in the Schoch Cup, 58-18, and the Bears have won 18 of the last 19 meetings. Since 1980, the Cardinal have only won three times (1988, 1990, 2008).
In The Rankings
In this week's USRowing Collegiate poll, Cal remained at No. 2 in the nation. This week's opponent, Stanford, sits at No. 13, while Washington tops the chart at No. 1.
Racing For A Cause
Cal and Stanford will be racing to celebrate breast cancer survivors and createfurther awareness of the disease. Also, this year both the men's and women's teamswill be racing in support of teammate Jill Costello and her fight with Lung Cancer.
'We want Jill and her family to know that we are amazed at how she has handledherself throughout this battle, and that we are standing with her as she fights thisdisease.' Teti said.
Cal has next week off as it prepares for the Pac-10 Championships on May 16.
